A power plant operates on an advanced Rankine cycle which has an open and a closed feedwater heaters. Steam enters the first turbine stage at 12 bars and 520 C and expands in three stages to the condenser pressure of 0.06 bar. Between the first and the second stages, a fraction x of the steam is extracted and diverted to a closed feedwater heater at 10 bar. This fraction exits the closed feedwater heater as saturated liquid and then is pumped to 12 bar and injected into the boiler feedwater line with a temperature of 170 C. A fraction y of steam is extracted between the second and the third turbine stages at 1.5 bar and fed into an open feedwater heater operating at that pressure. Saturated liquid at 1.5 bar leaves the open feedwater heater. Saturated liquid exits the condenser. Assume all pumps and turbines are isentropic. a) Show the cycle in TS diagram indicating all known parameters.- b) Write the conservation of energy for the closed feedwater heater. c) Write the conservation of energy for the open feedwater heater. d) Determine the thermal efficiency of the cycle.
