The subsurface soil conditions at a site of a future dam consist of two soil layers. The surface layer is about 7.5 m thick of a clayey soil with a coefficient of permeability of 2.5 * 10-4 m/sec; the permeability coefficient for this layer is expected to be isotropic. At the site of the future dam, there is also a deeper layer of varved clayey-soil of about 15.0 m thickness; the thickness of this layer is limited by the bedrock, which slopes upwards about 10 degrees towards down stream. The permeability coefficient of this deeper layer is expected to be 5 * 10^-4 m/sec perpendicular to the plane of bedding that is parallel to the bedrock and 2.5 * 10^-3 m/sec in the direction parallel to the plane of bedding.

The dam will be designed for a depth of water ponding in the reservoir of 7.0 m. The ground surface at this site is approximately horizontal. It is desired to design the dam from a geotechnical point of view. The purpose of this project is to select the type of dam and the cross-section, and provide all the conditions expected to exists such as uplift force and line of action of application, exit gradient, and flow rate down-stream of the dam per unit thickness along the crown of the dam.

Explain the given end product of this project which are given below.

a. Identification of problem variables.
b. Selection of appropriate model, that is the rational for the selection.
c. Assumptions on which the analysis is based.
d. Analytical solutions applied and why these are appropriate.
e. Documentation of the results of the design and analysis.
