Lead shot is formed by dropping molten lead through the center of a high tower. The frictional resistance of the air as the lead falls down the tower helps to form the spherically shaped "shot" and to cool the lead. If the 2mm diameter lead shot is dropped in a tower when the air is 17°C, estimate the terminal velocity or steady state velocity of the shot and the heat transfer from each shot. Assume the lead is at 227°C when terminal velocity is reached. Estimate the tower height required to allow the shot to cool to a temperature of 60°C.
