A countershaft in a machine has two pulleys mounted on it for power transmission and is supported by cylindrical roller bearings at the ends. The countershaft runs at 1,500 revolutions per minute. The belt tension on the loose side of Pulley 1 is 15% of the tension on tight side. The pulleys are 50 mm wide. The bearings must have a minimum life of 90,000 hours. Design the shaft, mounting components and bearings. The design will include the following items. (1) Shaft material selection (2) Shaft diameters at critical locations along the shaft (using a factor of safety of 1.5) (3) Selection and design of the components needed for mounting the shaft and bearings (4) Selection and design of bearings

On solidification from a melt, the polymer polyethylene forms a semi-crystalline spherulite structure. (i) sketch an individual spherulite and label the amorphous and crystalline regions. (ii) draw a schematic to show the changes in specific volume with temperature during cooling from the melt, comparing it to the theoretical extremes of fully crystalline and fully amorphous (indicate tm and tg)
