A cell culture vessel is filled with cell culture medium (similar to water in its physical properties). An impeller (30.0 W) slowly stirs the CCM. The cell culture vessel is operated in a continuous manner. Fresh cell culture medium (CCM) enters the vessel at 10˚C. Spent CCM exits the vessel at 36˚C. A stream of carbon dioxide is continuously injected into the vessel to help control the pH of the medium (the heat capacity of carbon dioxide can be considered as a constant value). The vessel is not insulated and as a result loses some heat to the surroundings, which are at 25˚C. Here is some data about each stream in the system: Stream 1: 10˚C at 1 bar Stream 2: 36˚C at 1 bar exits the vessel at 2000. g/hr Stream 3: 23˚C at 5 bar enters the vessel at 1.0 L/hr Stream 4: 36˚C at 5 bar The heat lost from the vessel can be estimated using the following relationship: Q = UA(Tsurroundings – Tsystem) A = 0.19 m2 U = 3.2 W / (m2 ˚C) A diagram of this system is shown below. How much heat must be transferred to or from the cell culture vessel to achieve these operating conditions?
