5. A GPS satellite is stationed at a fixed position outside the atmospheric layer and face to the surface of earth. The satellite can be simplified as a large disc of composite material, with temperature-dependent conductivity along its thickness and given internal heating source distribution. Assuming the earth temperature is about 280 K and space environment is about 4 K. Establish a model for the transient surface temperatures of sun-lit surface and earth facing surface during the daylight time (between sun-rise and sun-set) of a given day. Assume the emissivity of surface material is diffuse but spectrum dependent (not a gray surface). The time is based on local solar time, and the solar constant is known.

Amass of 1.5 kg of air at 120 kpa and 24°c is contained in a gas-tight, frictionless piston-cylinder device. the air is now compressed to a final pressure of 720 kpa. during the process, heat is transferred from the air such that the temperature inside the cylinder remains constant. calculate the boundary work input during this process.

Air is to be cooled in the evaporator section of a refrigerator by passing it over a bank of 0.8-cm-outer-diameter and 0.4-m-long tubes inside which the refrigerant is evaporating at -20°c. air approaches the tube bank in the normal direction at 0°c and 1 atm with a mean velocity of 4 m/s. the tubes are arranged in-line with longitudinal and transverse pitches of sl- st 1.5 cm. there are 30 rows in the flow direction with 15 tubes in each row. determine (a) the refrigeration capacity of this system and (b) pressure drop across the tube bank. evaluate the air properties at an assumed mean temperature of -5°c and 1 atm. is this a good assumption?
