A heating system must maintain the interior of a building at TH = 20°C when the outside temperature is TC = 10°C. If the rate of heat transfer from the building through its walls and roof is 15 kW, determine the electrical power required, in kW, to heat the building using: (a) electrical-resistance heating; (b) a heat pump whose coefficient of performance is 4; (c) a reversible heat pump operating between hot and cold reservoirs at 20°C and 10°C, respectively.

Apiping systems consists of 6 m of 6-std type k and 12 m of 4-std type k, both drawn copper tubing. the system conveys ethylene glycol at a rate of 0.013 m3/s. the pressure drop across the system is to be calculated. there are two 90° elbows in the 6-in pipe, a reduction from the 6-in pipe to the 4-in pipe and four 90° elbows in the 4-in pipe. all fittings are soldered (same as flanged) and regular. the inlet and outlet of the system are at the same height.

An inventor claims to have developed a reversed heat engine (ie. a heat pump) which is able to deliver 10 kj heat into the room at 20°c from outside ambient temperature of -10°c by consuming only 2 kj electricity in winter. this claim is a)-impossible b)-possible only if the heat pump is ideal c)-practically possible d)-unable to be assessed as it depends on the working fluid used in the heat pump.
