The core of a high‐temperature, gas‐cooled nuclear reactor has coolant tubes of 20‐mm diameter and 780‐mm length. Helium enters at 600 K and exits at 1000 K when the flow rate is 8 × 10^−3 kg/s per tube.

(a) Determine the uniform tube wall surface temperature for these conditions.
(b) If the coolant gas is air, determine the required flow rate if the heat removal rate and tube wall surface temperature remain the same. What is the outlet temperature of the air?

Apreheater involves the use of condensing steam at 100°c on the inside of a bank of tubes to heat air that enters at 1 atm and 25°c. the air moves at 5 m/s in cross flow over the tubes. each tube is 1 m long and has an outside diameter of 10 mm. what is the minimum value of nl needed to achieve an outlet temperature of t 75 c? what is the corresponding pressure drop across the tube bank?

On solidification from a melt, the polymer polyethylene forms a semi-crystalline spherulite structure. (i) sketch an individual spherulite and label the amorphous and crystalline regions. (ii) draw a schematic to show the changes in specific volume with temperature during cooling from the melt, comparing it to the theoretical extremes of fully crystalline and fully amorphous (indicate tm and tg)
