The idealized cycle taking place inside a diesel cylinder differs only slightly from the Otto cycle discussed in class for a gasoline engine. The compression stroke is similarly adiabatic, but the fuel burning takes place at constant pressure (not constant volume like gasoline). The rest of the diesel cycle is the same as gasoline, an ad abatic power stroke (expansion) and a constant volume cooling of the gas.

Consider a diesel motor operating a cylinder (volume-0.80 L) with compression ratio of 16 using an Argon gas starting at 50 C Gjust before compression) and atmospheric pressure. Assume the heat released from burning vaporized diesel fuel in the cylinder releases 350 J of heat.

a) Draw a Pressure-Volume diagram for the diesel cycle. Indicate heat flow in, out or zero, as appropriate for each segment of the cycle. Display with shading the net work done by the gas during the cycle.

b) Calculate the work done by the gas on each segment of the cycle. What is the net work done by the gas?

c) Calculate the heat exchanged by the gas on each segment of the cycle. What is the net heat exchanged by the gas?

d) Compare your results for the net work and heat in b) and c). Explain your result?

e) Calculate the thermal efficiency of this diesel motor?

Asolid cylinder is concentric with a straight pipe. the cylinder is 0.5 m long and has an outside diameter of 8 cm. the pipe has an inside diameter of 8.5 cm. the annulus between the cylinder ad the pipe contains stationary oil. the oil has a specific gravity of 0.92 and a kinematic viscosity of 5.57 x 10-4 m2/s. most nearly, what is the force needed to move the cylinder along the pipe at a constant velocity of 1 m/s?
