Problem 1: Weight Volume Relationships
Given:
Borrow soil will be required to fill a 1,000 yd depression in the ground. The borrow soils have a
moist unit weight of 100 pcf, a water content of 12% and a specific gravity of 2.60. The job
specification requires that the fill soils need to be compacted to a dry unit weight of 110 pcf
and a water content of 15%.
Compute:
A) How many cubic yards of borrow soil are needed?
B) How many gallons of water will have to be added to achieve the required moisture content
in the fill areas, assuming there is no loss due to evaporation during transportation?

Water in a partially filled large tank is to be supplied to the roof top, which is 8 m above the water level in the tank, through a 2.2-cm-internal-diameter pipe by maintaining a constant air pressure of 300 kpa (gage) in the tank. if the head loss in the piping is 2 m of water, determine the discharge rate of the supply of water to the roof top in liters per second.
