In many locations the price of electricity is different during the day (high demand, high cost) than it is at night (low demand, low cost). a small start-up company has developed a plan to capitalize on this price difference. their plan is to pump water from a lake up to a reservoir during the night when costs are low and then release the water back down to the lake through a turbine during the day to generate electricity during the day. they have engaged you to perform an analysis on their system. the system consists of a pump/turbine (meaning it can be operated as either a pump or a turbine). the pump/turbine system is 75 percent in both directions (i. e. when used as a pump or as a turbine). there is an irreversible head loss of 4 m again in either direction (i. e flowing up or flowing down). the reservoir is 50m above the lake and the system flow rate is 2 m3/s. the cost of electricity is $0.06/kwh at night. on average the system runs in each direction for 10 hours per day. how much would the utility need to pay in order for the company to break even? comment on this idea from a sustainability perspective. would you recommend this solution? why or why not?
