Recently, 3D printers have been increasing in both popularity and affordability. They are being used in laboratories, offices, shops, and also in residential locations (dorm rooms and apartments). The fact that there are known hazards associated with the use of these types of printers has prompted RIT's EH&S Department to take a closer look at the printers used on campus and evaluate them for their safety.

3D printer hazards include, but are not limited to:

•The generation of ultrafine/nano-sized
particles;
•Heat;
•Mechanical hazards from moving parts;
•High voltage;
•Ultraviolet light; and
•Chemical vapors (ex. styrene, acrylonitrile, or formaldehyde, etc.) depending on the media being used.

A 3D printer essentially works by extruding molten plastic through a tiny nozzle that it moves around precisely under computer control. It prints one layer, waits for it to dry, and then prints the next layer on top. ... The plastic from which models are printed is obviously hugely important.

Safety rules

When printing, please remember to adjust the temperature to material you print with. ...
Never touch hot parts of the machine - extruder nozzle and heated bed.
Keep the machine in well ventilated room to minimize accumulation of fumes and smells.
Don't touch moving parts of the machine - toothed belts, Z-axis screws, rails.
