Sulfate reducers are also called sulfate reducing prokaryotes and are composed of sulfate-reducing bacteria and sulfate reducing archaea. They can also perform anaerobic respiration utilizing sulfate as terminal electron acceptor, reducing it to hydrogen sulfide.
