In a single electron atom, their are n2 orbitals at each principle quantum number n. These orbitals are degenerate, it takes the same energy for an electron to exist in a 3s as a 3p or 3d orbital. When more electrons are added splitting occurs and the orbital diagram becomes more complex.

This splitting of s, p and d orbitals occurs because of the shape of each orbital. Match the reason below for how each sub level is effected in a multi-electron system to produce this splitting.

Describe how s, p, and d orbitals are affected by multi-electron systems.

In november 1987, a massive iceberg broke loose from the antartic ice mass and floated free in the ocean. the chunk of ice was estimated to be 98 mi long, 25 mi wide, and 750 ft thick. a typical backyard swimming pool contains about 24,000 gallons of water. how many of these pools could you fill from the water in this iceberg? (assume the iceberg is a rectangular solid of the above dimensions and consists of water only). express answer in scientific notation.
