PLS HELP NO LINKS PLS Step 1: What is the need?
You must first choose food that you want to package, so you should head for a supermarket to get some ideas and decide what specific kind of food you want to create a package for. Is there a food that you think could have a more useful, more convenient kind of packaging? What kinds of materials are packages made of? Why is one material used over another? What kinds of information is printed on the package such as weight, description, ingredients, brand logo, graphics, nutritional information.

Step 2: Research what solutions already exist.
Once you have chosen the kind of food you want to package, buy a package of the food the way it is now packaged. Carefully disassemble the packaging. Make notes of the following: what materials are used, how was it made, how does the packaging hold the food, how is it sealed, is there a handle on it for carrying, etc.

Step 3: Brainstorm some solutions.
Can packaging be made from other materials? Consider the environment as part of the discussion. Is there a more useful way to package the food product so it is easily accessible or convenient to carry (handles) or has better preservation qualities. Be inventive.

Step 4: Decide on a solution - materials, design, tools needed.
Considerations should include the following:
Appearance - is it attractive to potential customers? Does the consumer want to pick it up and look at the contents?
Convenience - Is it easy to use, open, carry?
Function - Does it contain the food product effectively. Will it help preserve or seal food contents to prevent spoilage?
Safety - Will it help preserve or seal food contents to to keep the food fresh? Will it prevent damage? (Think of eggs, for example.)
Reliability - Is the package strong enough for its intended purpose? Will it last long enough for the life of the food product?
Impact on environment - Is the material biodegradable? Can it be effectively recycled? Some materials that are based on wood products will more readily disappear or dissolve into the environment. Steel will eventual rust. Aluminum can be a problem but is easily recycled. Some plastics last from hundreds to thousands of years in the environment. Plastic's durability and longevity unfortunately make it a good package material but bad for the environment. Glass takes up space in landfills but can be recycled and does not react chemically with the environment.
What tools are needed? Scissors, pliers, hammer?
Materials? Cardboard, tape, plastic, markers, etc.
(Some materials can be found at home. Craft stores will have inexpensive plastic film, tape and thin cardboard that you can use for your prototype.)

Step 5: Construct a prototype.
First make a drawing or template of the container, either to scale or actual size if possible. Then construct the package according to your plan. Submit digital photos of your completed prototype.

Step 6: Test and Evaluate.
Using the criterion in step 4 how does your packaging system measure up? Actually place the food type in the package for and see how it works. Make notes of where the package falls short of expectations.

Step 7: Refine original design and reconstruct the package based on your test and evaluation.
Submit photos of your revised prototype.
