Reactivity of Alkyl Halides - In-Lab Observations Observations of reactions with sodium iodide in acetone: 2 mL of 15% Nal in acetone was added to each of ten labeled test tubes. Each tube was labeled with the name of a different alkyl halide. 4 drops of each alkyl halide was added via pipet to the appropriate test tube. Each tube was shaken to mix the contents. Each tube was examined to see if there was any cloudiness or precipitation (ppt). After 5 minutes, if no precipitate was observed the tubes heated in a water bath at 50°C for 1 minute. The following observations were made: Tube Alkyl Halide Observations 1 2-chlorobutane Slightly cloudy after heating 2 2-bromobutane Immediate cloudiness 3 1-chlorobutane Cloudy after 2 minutes 4 1-bromobutane Dense ppt immediately 5 2-chloro-2-methylpropane No cloudiness even after heating 6 crotyl chloride Dense ppt immediately 7 benzyl chloride Dense ppt immediately 8 bromobenzene No cloudiness even with heat 9 bromocyclohexane Slight ppt after heating 10 bromocyclopentane Cloudiness after 1 minute Observations of reactions with silver nitrate in ethanol: 2 mL of 1% AgNO3 in ethanol was added to each of ten labeled test tubes. Each tube was labeled with the name of a different alkyl halide. 4 drops of each alkyl halide was added via pipet to the appropriate test tube. Each tube was shaken to mix the contents. Each tube was examined to see if there was any cloudiness or precipitation (ppt). After 5 minutes, if no precipitate was observed the tubes heated in a water bath at 100°C for 1 minute. The following observations were made: Tube Alkyl Halide Observations 1 2-chlorobutane Slightly cloudy after 2 minutes 2 2-bromobutane Immediate cloudiness 3 1-chlorobutane No ppt seen even after heating 4 1-bromobutane Very slight cloudiness after heating 5 2-chloro-2-methylpropane Dense ppt immediately 6 crotyl chloride Dense ppt immediately 7 benzyl chloride Dense ppt immediately 8 bromobenzene No cloudiness even after heating 9 bromocyclohexane Cloudiness seen after 1 minute 10 bromocyclopentane Cloudiness seen after 1 minute 3. For the Sw1 reactions in this lab, what was the identity of the nucleophile? What was the solvent? What are the best types solvents for SN1 reactions. 4. For the Sw2 reactions in the lab, what was the identity of the nucleophile? What was the solvent? What are the best types solvents for SN1 reactions. 5. Describe the suitability of the following substrate for an Sw1 and S2 reaction (is it reactive under S1/S2 conditions? Why or why not, be very specific!) Br 6. Describe the suitability of the following substrate for an S1 and 52 reaction (is it reactive under Sw1/S 2 conditions? Why or why not, be very specific!) Br HC H. H
