The hydroxyl end groups of a sample (2.00 g) of linear poly(ethylene oxide) were acetylated by reaction with an excess of acetic anhydride (2.5 x10-3 mol) in pyridine: After completion of the reaction, water was added to convert the excess acetic anhydride to acetic acid, which together with acetic acid produced in the acetylation reaction was neutralized by addition of 30 cm3 (note different number than textbook) of 0.100 mol/dm3 solution of sodium hydroxide.
