we will take a known volume of hydrochloric acid in a conical flask and add excess insoluble magnesium carbonate. they will react to produce soluble magnesium chloride and carbon dioxide gas. we will filter out the excess magnesium carbonate using filter paper and collect the filtrate which is the magnesium chloride solution. next, heat the solution till the point of saturation and allow it to cool. filter the solution to collect the magnesium chloride crystals and allow them to dry.
