To remove a metal pan from a hot oven, you must use an insulated pad or glove. If you do not, energy will transfer quickly to your hand by conduction. The pan is much hotter than your skin, so its particles have a lot more thermal energy. When the particles of the metal bump into the particles of your skin, energy is transferred.

When the hot pan is on top of the stove, you can tell that it is hot by holding your hand above the pan. The moving air around the pan absorbs energy and carries it to your skin by convection. You can also absorb energy by holding your hand to the side of a stove’s heating element. Energy is transferred through radiation to your skin.

Energy in the form of heat can be transferred by conduction, convection, and radiation. During all three types of energy transfer, the thermal energy of the warmer object decreases and the thermal energy of the cooler object increases. In all three types of energy transfer, energy is being transferred to a cooler object.
