Why are there craters on the Moon? (i can't find science or Selenography)

Unlike Earth it doesnt actually have a atmosphere to protect itself from being struck by the asteroids and or meteorites since our atmosphere pushes back anything entering if it can reach the inside of the object it could break it apart from the inside which is why many rockets are set up with protective layers to avoid being split apart during re entering.
