Why is aluminium used to make outer covering of aeroplane?

Aluminium alloys are used because they are light, relatively strong and inexpensive. Aluminum on its own is very soft and weak. However add about .24% copper and it becomes heat treatable and the 2024 alloy also age hardens. This works well for the skin of the aircraft. Rivets made from the 2117 alloy (.17% copper) work harden. This means they become hard as they are installed, resulting in a strong, durable structure. However aluminum alloys do have their limitations, and repeated cabin pressurization cycles can result in fatigue and cracking. These are normally found and repaired during the various aircraft letter checks.
