depends on the teacher and class. you could go as far as explaining that the molecular makeup of a liquid involves molecules moving across a larger distance at a slower rate than a solid which doesn't allow it to hold a solid state. Or they move across a smaller distance than a gas, making it more grouped together. 

The mass has escaped into a gas which you can not see so the law stays true.
