Why do different atoms give off different colors of light

When heated, atoms give off different colors of light because different atoms emit different colors when the electron jumps from their ground state to a higher energy level, this is called excitation. When electrons move energy levels, a photon is given off (this is emission) and photons have different wavelengths and frequencies so they will have different energies that produce different colors of light.
