An electrolyte is a substance that when dissolved in water, the solution will conduct electricity. A solution that conducts electricity well is said to contain a strong electrolyte. A solution that conducts electricity poorly even when a significant quantity of the solute is present contains a weak electrolyte. In contrast, a substance that does not conduct electricity when dissolved in water is a nonelectrolyte.
