Conformational isomerism is a form of stereo isomerism that occurs when single bonds are rotated. Rotational energy creates a barrier between the various conformers. There are about four conformers of butane depending on the angle of rotation of the molecule. These conformers are separated by energy barriers as shown in the image attached. There must always be a most stable conformer of any compound which will have the lowest energy and greatest stability among other conformers of the compound.
