With what we now know about formal charge, we can start looking at lewis structures we drew earlier. perhaps we didn't always draw them correctly. in the section on resonance, one of the first examples was of the molecule so2 which was suggested to exhibit resonance. does it? draw the resonance structure for so2 and you will notice it has a formal charge of 1, 0, -1 on each of its atoms. can we do better? try redrawing the lewis structure of so2 and feel free to put more than eight electrons on the sulfur. after all, it can use the 3d subshell. can you make a lewis structure in which every atom has a formal charge of 0?

The content of manganese (mn) in steel was determined spectrophotometrically and with the use of the standard addition method. an unknown sample of mn from a digested steel sample gave an absorbance of 0.185 when analyzed spectrophotometrically. when 5.00 ml of solution containing 95.5 ppm mn was added to 50.0 ml of the unknown steel solution (digested sample), the absorbance was 0.248. calculate the concentration, in parts-per-million (ppm), of mn in the digested steel sample solution.
