Experiment title: friedel-crafts reaction organic technique and overview: this experiment demonstrates a friedel-crafts alkylation of an activated benzene molecule with a tertiary alcohol sulfuric acid acts as the lewis acid catalyst during this substitution involving an attack by an electrophilic trimethylcarbocation. goal of the experiment: to prepare 1,4-di-t-butyl-2-5-dimethoxybenzene . experiment protocol 1). in a test tube, dissolve 250mg of 1,4 dimethoxybenzene in iml acetic acid. it may be necessary to gently warm the mixture to completely dissolve the 1,4 dimethoxybenzene. 2). add 0.4ml of t-butyl alcohol (9 drops). add 0.8ml of concentrated sulfuric acid (20 drops) gently swirl the tube after each drop is added the mixture will heat up with the addition of sulfuric acid 3). allow 10 minutes for the reaction to occur and mix intermittently. cool the tube in an ice bath for 2-3 minutes 4). while still on ice, slowly add 2.5ml of water (approx. 55 drops) to the tube, swirling it after every few drops. remove the water with a pasteur pipette, leaving the crystals. repeat this step with 1.0ml water 5) recrystallize the product from methanol 6) dry the product on filter paper, weigh it, and calculate the yield 1,4-dimethoxybenzene: mw 138.16, mp 57°c
