A. the elementary liquid phase reaction a + b à c takes place in a 120 l steady state mixed flow reactor with a rate constant of 2 liter/mol-min. two feed streams, one containing 2.8 mol a/liter and the other, 1.6 mol b/liter, are to be introduced at equal flow rates into the reactor, and 75% conversion of b is desired. what should be the flow rate of each stream? (hint: begin by calculating the entering concentrations of a and b assuming that the two streams are mixed before entering the reactor… a throwback to the mixing tee problem)
b. we now propose to run the reaction of problem 5 in a plug flow reactor. what volume of plug flow reactor is needed to produce the same 75% conversion of b from the feed stream flow rates you determined in problem 4? hint, use a basis of 1 l/min combined feed streams.

Tooth enamel consists mainly of the mineral calcium hydroxyapatite, ca_10(po_4)_6(oh)_2. trace elements in teeth of archaeological specimens provide anthropologist with clues about diet and diseases of ancient people. students at hamline university measured strontium in enamel from extracted wisdom teeth by atomic absorption spectroscopy. solutions with a constant total volume of 10.0 ml contained 0.726 mg of dissolved tooth enamel plus variable concentrations of added sr. added sr find the concentration of sr in the 10 ml sample solution in parts per billion = ng/ml. find the concentration of sr in tooth enamel in parts per million = mu g/g.
