Complete the lab below using household items and submit your responses to the analyze and conclude questions as a portfolio item on the assessment page of this lesson.

purpose

to measure the ph of various household materials by using a natural indicator to make an indicator chart.

materials
baking soda (nahco3)
clean white cloth
clear plastic cups (ten)
dropper
hot water
household ammonia
jars (two)
knife
one-cup measuring cup
plain white paper (three sheets)
pencil
red cabbage leaves
ruler
tape
teaspoon
various household items
white vinegar (ch3cooh)
procedure
put ½ cup of finely chopped red cabbage leaves in a jar and add ½cup of hot water. stir and crush the leaves with a spoon. continue the extraction process until the water is distinctly colored.
strain the extract through a piece of cloth into a clean jar. this liquid is your natural indicator.
tape three sheets of paper end to end. draw a line along the center and label it at five cm intervals with the numbers 1–14. this is your ph scale.
pour your indicator into each of three plastic cups to a depth of one cm. add several drops of vinegar to the first cup, add a pinch of baking soda to the second cup, and add several drops of ammonia to the third cup. the resulting colors indicate ph values of about 3, 9, and 11, respectively. place these colored cups in the correct positions on your ph scale.
repeat step 4 for household items such as table salt, borax, milk, lemon juice, laundry detergent, dish detergent, milk of magnesia, toothpaste, shampoo, or carbonated beverages. test a minimum of five household items using your natural ph scale.
portfolio item answer the following questions and submit your results to your teacher via the drop box on the assessment page of this lesson.
what was the color of the indicator at acidic, neutral, and basic conditions?
what chemical changes were responsible for the color changes?
label the materials you tested as acidic, basic, or neutral.
which group contains items used for cleaning or personal hygiene?
