P waves are compression waves, this means that they can travel through all mediums, and all cores of earth, including the inner core, while S waves can only travel through solids, this makes them much more slower. P waves for example can be trackable on the other side of the earth from where the earthquake´s epicenter is, because they travel through the core of the earth, while S waves are only detectable near the epicenter of the earthquake.
