Last year, I had my students read an article that presented various arguments on whether the U. S. should continue to fund space exploration. There were arguments for it (we could find valuable resources, we can inspire kids to learn more about science, it creates jobs, we could find new forms of technology, etc.). There were also arguments against it (mainly that the cost was too high and there are other more important ways we could spend tax dollars). Today, I figured I would give you an opportunity to find another topic that involves opportunity cost for society. Find at least one article that discusses a topic where you can apply this concept on a larger, society-wide level. Almost anything can work! (Remember how we said everything has a cost?!) What was your topic?

Which factors of production are involved?

Which of the three economic questions are involved? (refer to page 3 of your notes: What goods and services are produced? How are goods and services produced? For whom are goods and services produced?) Explain.

How does your topic show a societal opportunity cost?

What are the benefits?

What are the costs?

What is your opinion on the topic? If you worked in a group, did you agree or disagree? How so?
