Architecture & Construction Cluster Continued
Construction Pathway
The construction pathway holds jobs for the people who literally build our future. This pathway includes the actual builders—such as carpenters, painters, and roofers—as well as those who oversee the building process, such as super intendents, construction engineers, and project managers. The builders are most often out in the field working on creating the structures. They are skilled at using their hands and minds to make a plan come to life. Those who oversee typically have a mixture of both working in the field doing the actual building as well as working in an office taking care of “big picture” pieces of the project like planning and scheduling. They see all the little parts that need to come together to create a finished project and oversee things to make sure each part runs smoothly. Education for this career cluster ranges from high school diplomas and apprenticeships for entry level building jobs to bachelor’s and master’s degrees for those who oversee the projects. The higher the education, the higher you can advance (or grow) in this pathway.

Building is the main feature of careers in the Construction pathway.

What kinds of things do people in these pathways help build? Well, the short answer is—everything! These are the careers that build up the structures in our world. People who work in this pathway build and remodel:

Maintenance/Operations Pathway
The Maintenance/Operations pathway holds the careers that keep our structures in the best shape they can be. People in these careers keep structures up and running by knowing machinery, and knowing it well. They know exactly where new machinery should be placed, how to put that machinery together, and how to repair and do preventative maintenance on the machinery. They are skilled in keeping things ticking. Some jobs/careers that fall into this pathway include system installers, technicians, service contractors, manufacturing representatives, and different types of manufacturing engineers. People who work in this pathway most often work at the structure where the machinery is needed, sometimes working with the machinery directly and sometimes working in an office. Jobs and careers in this pathway range in education levels, from high school diplomas all the way to master’s degrees.

Let’s take a look back at Xavier for a minute. As an independent contractor who installs drywall, he would fall under the construction pathway of this cluster. Xavier, although he does more of the building, is also (as we talked about) an independent contractor. An independent contractor works for themselves, on a project by project basis. They work with clients for a short amount of time on projects, until the job is done, and then move onto the next client and project. Xavier, in a way, owns his own business where he sells out his service of doing drywall for homes and buildings. So while, yes, he is doing a lot of the building work, he is also in a way running his own company, so he might want to further his education past a high school diploma/ apprenticeship to learn more about the business side of things as well. The fact that he is also taking on his own “big picture” project of building his own house puts him in the shoes of a project manager as well! A project manager is in charge of the planning and executing of a project from beginning to end. They oversee every part of a project that needs to be done from the beginning to the middle and end. They are not only in charge of the process but also of each person who works on each part of the process. This higher-end career typically requires at least a bachelor’s degree, if not a master’s.
