The vegetation binds the soil to the roots of the plant and in this way the soil is being prevented from soil erosion. It roots of the plants binds to the soil in such a way that it does not erodes easily.

If the land is steep and the erosion starts anyhow then the soil keeps on moving and moving until all the loose soil is eroded.

If the land is flat then there is lesser chance of the soil that will erode from it. Hence, for prevention of soil the land be flat and properly vegetated.
