Mitosis is a type of cell division in which a parent cell divides to form two daughter cells with diploid number of chromosomes. The process takes place in the somatic cells (body cells) and in five steps namely; interphase, prophase, metaphase, anaphase and telophase. In telophase (the last stage of mitosis) the mitotic spindle breaks down and chromatin uncoils. This is essentially the opposite of what happens in prophase. In prophase chromatin condenses into discrete chromosomes visible with alight microscope and the mitotic spindle begins to form.
