Both Indira Gandhi and Golda Meir were the first female prime ministers of their respective countries that had recently won their independence.

Golda Meir became the prime minister of Israel in 1969 and served till 1974.  She was the 4th prime minister of Israel and the only woman ever to serve in that position. Indira Gandhi served as prime minister of India from 1966 to 1977 and then again from 1980 to 1984. She has been the only woman to serve as prime minister of India.
