the scientist obtains either the same gene or the same protein from each of the three organisms. then the sequence of the dna or protein is determined and the three sequences are lined up and compared to see how well they match. the greater the match between any pair of sequences, the closer the linkage is between the two organisms. the greater the difference in sequence, the more distant the relationship. once it has been determined how close or distant the relationship is between all of the organisms, a diagram is created that resembles a branched tree. organisms are placed on closely linked branches if they have a strong math in sequence, while organisms with poorly matching sequences are placed on branches much farther away from one another.
