Plant succession is the process by which plant communities get established on a barren land over a period of time starting from a pioneer species to climax community. Pioneer species such as lichen begins to secrete acids that begin to break rock into small particles. The small rock particles mix with lichen remains which is the beginning of formation of soil.  On addition of more soil, more complex plants such as moss grows. Later on mosses are replace by higher plants.
