Mike and Tim are outside with a wagon. Tim weighs 311 Newtons (70lbs) and gets in the wagon and Mike, who weighs 50 Newtons (50lbs), pulls it. As Mike pulls it, he accelerates until reaching a constant velocity. After stopping, Mike and Tim switch places. Tim now pulls Mike in the wagon, accelerating from a stop to a constant velocity. Now, Tim may be bigger than Mike, but Mike has been working out and is just as strong as Tim, so the force that Tim uses to pull the wagon is the same force that Mike used. Both pull with the exact same amount of force. Who was riding in the wagon when it had the greatest acceleration during start up? Why? Use Newton’s second law to explain

Female luna moths (actias luna) attract males by emitting chemical signals that spread through the air. a male hundreds of meters away can detect these molecules and fly toward their source. the sensory organs responsible for this behavior are the comblike antennae visible in the photograph shown here. each filament of an antenna is equipped with thousands of receptor cells that detect the sex attractant. based on what you learned in this chapter, propose a hypothesis to account for the ability of the male moth to detect a specific molecule in the presence of many other molecules in the air. what predictions does your hypothesis make? design an experiment to test one of these predictions.

The table presents the average day and night temperatures in five cities. it also reveals whether a city receives substantial rainfall (wet climate) or little rainfall (dry climate). which city’s rocks are likeliest to experience frost wedging, and why? a) city a because the consistently subzero temperature would prevent water from melting b) city b because it is a wet region and the temperature fluctuates around the freezing point c) city c because it receives plenty of rain fall and the weather is moderately cool d) city d because the hot and dry weather would cause rocks to absorb water
