Please help: Pome and Stone Fruits

Today we are learning about two more types of fruit crops in the Rosaceae family: those that produce pome fruits or stone fruits (make sure you remember the 2 other fruit crops in the Rosaceae we discussed).

Provide 2 examples of pomes
Provide 4 examples of stone fruits
In Texas we typically use either central leader or open center pruning

What is the difference between the two?
Which pruning style do we typically use for stone fruits?
Which pruning style do we typically use for pome fruits?
Some fruit trees have chilling requirements (think about why and what that means)

What is a chilling temperature (give T range)?
What is a chilling unit?
What happens if you grow high chill varieties in location that is too warm (200 hour zone)?
What happens if you grow low chill varieties in a location that is too cold (900-1000 hour zone)?
Some fruit trees are self-infertile and require a compatible variety to be grown with them to insure pollination.

Which fruit crops are self infertile?
Are pome and stone fruits wind or insect pollinated?
Pecans are the State Tree of Texas. Some pecan varieties are protogynous and some varieties are protandrous.

What does protogynous mean? What does protandrous mean?
So are flowers perfect? Are trees monoecious or dioecious?
Why is knowing whether varieties are protogynous or protandrous important?
Are pecans wind or insect pollinated?
