For yeast fermenting glucose to ethanol, which form or forms of labeled glucose would give the most radioactivity in carbon dioxide and the least in ethanol? In the glycolytic pathway, fructose-1,6-bisphosphate (FBP) contains one phosphate each at (a). Six carbon containing FBPFBP is acted upon by aldolase to yield two triose phosphates: dihydroxyacetone phosphate (DHAP) and glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate (GAP). The (b) -bound phosphate along with (c) of FBP forms DHAP, while (d) along with phosphate-bound (e) of FBP form GAP. Subsequent reaction steps result in the formation of pyruvate. The (f) end of DHAP or (g) end of GAPGAP end up as (h) of pyruvate, which yields CO2CO2 as it gets dehydrogenated to acetaldehyde. The acetaldehyde is converted to ethanol in the presence of alcohol dehydrogenase and NADH. Hence, (i) form of labeled glucose would give the most radioactivity in CO2 and the least in ethanol.
