- can be used to test new drugs for safety

- stem cells that can specialise into every type of cell must be taken from an embryo (VERY early stages of child development). because these are obtained from human embryos many questions and issues have been raised surrounding the ethics of using them.
- cost - as it is a new technology it is very expensive
