Within the TSD mechanism there are two distinct, genetically determined patterns, named pattern
I and pattern II. The details of each pattern are presented below:
Pattern I: Males develop below 82°F. Fem ales develop above 88°F. A mix of males and
females develop between temperatures of 82 and 88°F.
Pattern II: Males develop between temperatures of 73 and 82°F. Females develop below
73°F and above 82°F.
.
a
Describe the cellular event that must occur in box A in Figure 1. (1 point)
b. Explain the most likely gender(s) of sea turtles if TSD pattern I eggs are incubated at 92°F
and an aromatase competitive inhibitor is applied. (1 point)
C. Climate change is the long-term rise in the average temperature of Earth's climate system.
Predict the effect of climate change on the gender balance of sea turtles that exhibit TSD
pattern II and live in warmer climates. (1 point)
d. Researchers claim that TSD pattern I sea turtles will change to TSD pattern Il in response to
climate change. Provide evidence that either supports or refutes this claim. (1 point)
