The backbone is made of many small units of bone or cartilage called vertebrae. each vertebra has provides the site for attachment of muscles and for articulation. there is also a hole present in the center of the vertebrae which allows the spinal cord to pass through. each vertebra is made up of bone and hyaline cartilage. in total 33 vertebrae join together to form the backbone.
