Explain how wide-scale deforestation may contribute to global warming

When plants photosynthesize, they remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. When a large number of trees are removed from an area, the levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere remain higher than they would be if the trees were present. Since carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas, the presence of more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere means that more heat is trapped in the atmosphere. This causes temperatures near Earth’s surface to increase.
