Deforestation is the outright removal of forest layers and conversion of such land to other uses. Forest layers serve as sinks for carbon and also as filters for water running off to streams and seas. Hence, removal of forests affects both carbon and water cycles.

Paving a large parking lot involves covering the soil surface with asphalt, concrete or any other materials.
