The theory of evolution suggests that terrestrial animals evolved from aquatic animals. So, the transition from aquatic to terrestrial habitats was a formative event in vertebrate evolution because it led to a sudden emergence of species as new land animals which diversified in response to new physical and biological conditions which now required that they move, feed, respire and reproduce differently.

Scientists state that the lobe-finned fish and amphibians move onto land and live in water and that this amphibious habit requires their body systems to function in both environment. This requirement presents a plausible explanation to how their bodies gradually evolved to live on land.
