This is due to the difference in the phenotypic characters of an individual with others in the population. The better adaptive characters help individuals to be able to remain and increase their numbers.

In a population, variation exists among different organisms and between the organisms of the same species. This is because in an individual’s genome random mutations take place often and these mutations are inherited by their offspring. The individuals of a population undergo certain changes throughout their life span in accordance with their environmental conditions. These variations or changes in the traits of an organism increases its chances of survival compared to the individual who is less successful in producing a variation in its genome. This results in the evolution of the population which adapts better to a certain environment and the process is a natural selection where the fittest organism survives.
