Collagen is the protein part of this bone matrix while the remaining part of bone matrix is made up of minerals  which provide hardness and compressive strength. Bone cells are living cells and they receive nourishment through the blood. The food delivery and waste removal is done by the blood vessels which pierce into the hard compact surface of the bone.
