An acoustic neuroma is a tumor that arises from neurolemmocytes surrounding the vestibular portion of the vestibulocochlear nerve. The tumor is benign, but generally grows within the confined space of the petrous part of the temporal bone, thus compressing the nerve and creating problems with balance and hearing loss.
