If a research team is testing the effectiveness of a weight
loss pill, they have to design an experiment to test their
drug. Their hypothesis is that people who take this drug
will lose weight compared to people who do not.
They choose 100 subjects and give them all pills; though only 50 of the
subjects get the drug, the rest get a pill with no active ingredient in it.
